CCEVA

Guardianship/Conservatorship

In 1997, Catholic Charities of Eastern Virginia Inc, opened its doors to provide services to the older adult population.  By contracting with DARS, we began providing public guardianship services for individuals that were indigent. CCEVA also provided private guardianship for others that didn’t meet the public guardianship criteria but could benefit from guardianship services.

Currently, CCEVA serves as Guardian for individuals who have been deemed incapacitated by the courts. As the guardian of last resort, we are there when no family member is available or able to care for the individual. Our Guardianship case workers are responsible for providing ongoing case management and monitoring of the individual’s needs and services.

As Guardian, the case manager is responsible for managing the personal affairs of an incapacitated person, including decisions regarding:

Under guardianship, most clients are cared for throughout the remainder of their lives.

As Conservator, CCEVA has the legal authority to manage an individual’s financial affairs, including investments and monthly bills. These are monitored by the commissioner of accounts of each locality we serve.

Guardianship and Conservatorship designations are legal processes appointed by the Circuit Court following a hearing at which the individual in question can be present and is represented by a Guardian Ad Litem (attorney). If the Court agrees to elect a guardian and/or conservator, the serving entity must qualify with the Clerk of Court, after which the process of caring for the individual begins.
